What is TEAM-CBT?

TEAM is an acronym that represents the four essential ingredients for effective and lasting change:

T – Testing
E – Empathy
A – Assessment of Resistance
M – Methods

Think of it as a roadmap. We start with Testing to see where you are, build a connection through Empathy, understand what’s holding you back with Assessment, and then use powerful Methods to create change.

TEAM-CBT builds on traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) — thoughts, feelings, behaviors — but also adds new elements to make therapy more effective, personal, and flexible.

TEAM-CBT aims to help relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression, and emotional distress — and to give you tools you can continue to use on your own for the long run.

The Four Pillars of TEAM-CBT

Here’s how TEAM-CBT works, step by step:

1. T = Testing

  • At the beginning and end of every session, you  fill out a short, simple mood questionnaire
  • This helps track how you’re doing over time — your levels of depression, anxiety, overall mood, and sometimes other areas like relationships or stress.
  • The feedback is immediate — so we can see what’s changing (or not), and adjust the focus if needed. This makes therapy more transparent and effective.
  • Why it helps you:You don’t have to wait weeks to see progress. You can literally watch how your mood and symptoms move up or down — which can feel encouraging, help you stay engaged, and build confidence that therapy is working.

2. E = Empathy

  • Before doing any therapeutic “work,” we spend time making sure you feel heard, understood, and respected. It’s important you feel I can connect with you compassionately — not as a “case,” but human to human.
  • This deep empathy helps build a strong, trusting relationship, which is the foundation for change. Research shows that such “therapeutic alliance” is one of the strongest predictors of success in therapy. Biri Publishing+2Ehrin Weiss, Ph.D.+2
  • Why it helps you: Feeling alone with your pain is part of the problem. Genuine empathy reduces shame, builds trust, and creates the safety needed for change through acceptance, validation, and relief.

3. A = Agenda Setting

  • Before jumping into techniques, TEAM-CBT encourages exploring any resistance or ambivalence you may feel about change. For example: “Is part of you holding onto anxiety because it feels safe?” or “What might you lose if you stopped being depressed?” Biri Publishing+2Team CBT Australia+2
  • TEAM-CBT recognizes that symptoms often serve a purpose (protection, control, identity, familiarity). Biri Publishing+2arihahnlcsw.com+2
  • Only once we’ve talked this through, and you feel ready, will we incorporate change-oriented strategies.
  • Why it helps you:Many people struggle not because they don’t want to change, but because deep down they’re afraid change will remove something meaningful (safety, identity, familiarity). Acknowledging this prevents frustration with process and makes change less threatening, more compelling and gives you control.

4. M = Methods

  • Once testing, empathy, and agenda are in place, TEAM-CBT draws from a large toolkit — more than 50, often over 100 methods — to help you shift unhelpful thoughts, reactions, and behaviors
  • Methods can include traditional CBT techniques (like identifying and restructuring negative thoughts), behavioral tools, exposure for fears, role-plays, self-compassion exercises, reframing, and more
  • We work together to choose which methods suit your situation and personality. The therapy is customized to your individual needs
  • Why it helps you:Because we all think and feel differently, having a range of tools means you’re more likely to find strategies that actually resonate with you. The key is finding the right tools for you. We will be a team, experimenting to see what works best so you can keep using them long after therapy ends.

Many therapists who use TEAM-CBT say that clients often emerge able to “be their own therapist,” equipped to handle future setbacks without needing to start over. feelinggreatcbt.com+2Ehrin Weiss, Ph.D.+2

Why TEAM-CBT Might Be a Good Fit for You

You might find TEAM-CBT especially helpful if you:

  • Feel stuck in your life or with your current therapy, or feel that traditional talk therapy hasn’t helped as much as you hoped.
  • Struggle with motivation, feel ambivalent about change, or fear change will make things worse.
  • Want concrete feedback on how you’re doing (not just “how do you feel?”) but real measurable progress.
  • Benefit from structure and a variety of tools — not just one way of doing therapy.
  • Want to build long-term skills for managing mood, anxiety, stress, or difficult thoughts — not just short-term relief.

Things to Know / What It’s Not

  • TEAM-CBT is not magic — progress often depends on your willingness to engage, reflect, and practice. Putting time into your own “self-therapy” is a necessary component to achieve the results you want.
  • Sometimes methods won’t “work” at first — but because there are so many tools to choose from, we collaborate in “failing forward” until you find what fits.
  • There are good reasons why change feels hard or risky, and gently working on that together is an important part of the process before diving into methods.
  • TEAM-CBT is a journey: while many people see quick relief, lasting change often comes over multiple sessions and with consistent effort. Practicing techniques between sessions is where the real learning and change happen.

Your Role in TEAM-CBT: What You Bring to Therapy

To get the most out of TEAM-CBT, it helps if you:

  • Fill out the mood questionnaires honestly — even if you think “nothing’s changed.” Your feedback helps guide therapy.
  • Be as open as you can about your feelings, fears, and doubts — including ambivalence about change.
  • Be willing to try the methods even if they feel awkward or unfamiliar at first.
  • Be patient. Change doesn’t always come in a straight line. Sometimes you might feel better for a few days — then relapse — before deeper change happens.
  • Let’s work collaboratively: this is your therapy, and your thoughts, values, and goals guide what you do and achieve.

Summary — Why TEAM-CBT Matters
